VAST Mini-grant

Picture for the Page

Submittal Deadline: June 1, 2008
Recipients to be notified, and funds sent by July 1, 2008.

The purpose of the VAST Minigrant Program is to provide seed money for innovative curriculum activities which involve students in some unique way. Any person, or persons, who are members in good standing of the Virginia Association of Science Teachers, are eligible to apply. Applicants must have taught at the elementary or secondary level for a minimum of three (3) years, and be currently employed as a teacher. Team applications are welcome, however one person must be designated as the Project Director, and be responsible for all reporting.

Awardees will be selected by a committee appointed by the president of VAST. Awardees will be selected on the basis of originality, creativity, and the effectiveness of ideas that have direct student impact. The awards committee will look for projects that provide new experiences and make possible new scientific investigations with the most effective use of the funds provided. Preference will be given to persons who have not received prior VAST funding for proposals. VAST has budgeted $1,500 to fund these awards for 2006, and it is anticipated that individual awards will be in the range of $200 to $500. The selection committee may elect to not make an award if none of the proposals meets the goals outlined above.

Funds may be spent for supplies, equipment, printing, and other materials essential to the project. These monies are not intended for student travel (field trips) or for the personal remuneration of those who receive the grant. All materials will be the property of the school/school system in which the Project Director is employed at the time the grant is awarded. At the conclusion of the project, the Project Director is responsible for submitting the following by June 1, 2008.

  1. A short summary report (to the VAST president);
  2. A brief article about the project (to the Newsletter Editor);
  3. Arrangements to make a presentation on the project at a VAST conference, or that of a regional affiliate;
  4. An accounting (signed) of how/where the funds (VAST + any matching funds) were spent (t0 the Treasurer);
  5. Return of any unused funds (to the Treasurer).
